REMIX 12.0 Featured Photographers

Talented, ambitious and wise are just a few words to describe all the amazing young photographers I've had the honour of teaching over the last few years at the Remix Project. This term is no exception, I have the pleasure and honour of leading five extremely talented and passionate individuals! Each with their own unique relationship to photography.

I feel so very grateful and blessed to embark on this journey alongside them.

It is my pleasure to introduce the next group of successful young rising stars! Definitely photographers to keep your eye on.

If you do what you love, you’ll never have to work a day in your life.

What do you hope to achieve in the next few months with REMIX?

A better understanding of lighting - flash/studio

Why do you love photography?

Knowing that I could capture a moment that can possibly live on forever gives me goosebumps.

If I didn’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive.

What do you hope to achieve in the next few months with REMIX?

I want to learn how to shoot black folks and people of colour in a way that reflects our beauty accurately. Learning how to light the full range of our skin tones is very important to me. I would love to spend more time in the studio, working on developing a stronger understanding of how to work with lighting.

Why do you love photography?

I choose to tell stories using photographs. I capture moments of joy, heartbreak, guilt, and grief. Documenting these moments acts to empower both myself and my community as we must curate our own narratives to reflect the range of our experiences and to represent ourselves on our own terms.

What do you hope to achieve in the next few months with REMIX?

What I hope to achieve in the next few months with REMIX, is to define my style and my unique aesthetic in how I choose to frame and capture an image. I also hope to make a lot of career long friends and hopefully build something great with the other participants. Above all, I would like to continue to learn and to expand my knowledge in the art of photography and moving images.

Why do you love photography and videography?

What I love about photography and videography is the idea that an event, idea or person can be immortalized forever once I press the shutter or hit record. A well captured frame has the ability to challenge status quo's and provoke conversation. I hope to someday accomplish this idea with my work, and hopefully inspire the change that I aspire to see in the world.

What do you hope to achieve in the next few months with REMIX?

I want to be able to find my style with photography. I want to be comfortable with myself and not be afraid to try new things. I want to network with other participants and hopefully collaborate with one another on projects. Ultimately in the next few months I want to be very consistent with my work so that when working with people I will be able to creatively direct the shoots with confidence.

Why do you love photography?

When I was in elementary school I was always fascinated with National Geographic magazines and seeing those breath taking pictures of landscapes in Africa, Asia and other foreign places. I travelled with my family to the Philippines and I remember seeing my first active Volcano. That image in my head has stuck with me ever since and even though I was young I always wished I had a camera to capture that scene. As I grew older it was only natural for me to get into photography. I always had an eye for things and finally I purchased my first camera this year. Photography takes me away from the stresses of my life and helps me appreciate the beauty in the things we see every day but take for granted. When we take a photo, we are documenting history. That to me is something truly special.
