Eyes can’t lie. By their very nature, they expose truth and vulnerability.
This two years will go down in history. While we must not gloss over the tremendous loss and suffering that many have had or continue to face around the world, we can use this as an impetus for change.
We are all interconnected. Our actions, no matter how small, truly affect others and we must walk with a new sense of responsibility.
‘Revealing 20/22’ is a portrait series. Through this work, I hope that people will connect with themselves, each other, and hopefully take a pause to reflect on our interconnection.
We think of masks as a means to protect, cover, to hide. But there’s a beautiful irony, here. Sometimes, the more we conceal the more we reveal.
I began my session by providing and asking each participant to choose a blank mask to wear in their photo. Before donning it, they were told to write on it—in as few or as many words and/ or illustrations as they’d like--about how this past year or two has made them feel. Any statements, thoughts, words that express their joy, sorrow, grief, anger, fear, love….
Then I took their photo.
Afterward, I asked them about what has given them strength since the beginning of the pandemic, and if they’ve experienced any unexpected positive or negative outcomes.
Finally, I asked each person to answer the question “Who do you wear a mask for?”
The project began in mid-September 2020 and I continued shooting until March 2022.
